When you’re bringing leverage into your business, a common path is to create leveraged products – things like courses, books, group programs, masterminds, etc. If you’re thinking you want to create a course, you already know that it’s a large undertaking so you want to make sure you’re in the best possible position for success. But how do you know when you’re ready?
Here are four questions to ask yourself before you dive into making a course:
1. Do you have enough knowledge and experience?
Creating a leveraged product requires extracting that spaghetti mess of knowledge out of your head and distilling it down into a flexible framework that can be delivered in a group setting.
But how do you know you’ve got “the stuff”? Short answer: proven results. It’s through working with 1:1 clients that we truly get to understand how we approach our zone of genius and discover our unique methodologies and processes.
If you’re brand new to working in your area, then you’re not ready to create high quality leveraged products that get results. Because it’s much harder to get consistent results for your clients in a 1:many scenario that it is in a 1:1 scenario.
In a 1:1 client relationship, it’s easy to “go with the flow” and adapt and respond as required. In a 1:many situation, this is less so. So you have to ensure that your processes have evolved through working with clients 1:1. Once you can demonstrate consistent proven results with your 1:1 clients and you find that you’re repeating the same messages, processes and concepts to different clients, then you’re ready to uplevel your business into leveraged products.
2. Do you have what it takes to make it happen?
Creating leveraged products will enable you to reach more people and make a bigger difference in the world. But, I won’t lie. It takes considerable work to set up a leveraged course or program and there are two things that will get you over the line when the going gets tough.
The first is purpose. Before you invest the significant time, energy and money into creating a course or program, make sure that it is aligned with your big why. Be absolutely clear about what your purpose is, to ensure the products you are creating are on the right path for you and your business.
Secondly, make sure you’re passionate about what you’re sharing with the world. Your passion is the fuel that drives you toward your purpose. If you don’t have enough fuel, you might give up delivering your leveraged program after only a short while or you may not even have enough stamina to finish creating it in the first place.
You need to have passion and purpose behind what you’re doing to make sure it’s worth creating. Delivering a course or program once or twice is terrible ROI for the hours of hard work creating it.

3. Do you have your own flavour that makes it unique to you?
In the age of the internet, we are more aware than ever that our ideas are not unique. There are plenty of people out there doing similar things.
But here’s a little secret: people are drawn to work with you because of who you are and how you show up in the world. Gone are the days of hiding behind a big corporate brand. If you are in a service-based business, your personal brand is paramount. It’s much harder to sell a 1:many offering than to sell your 1:1 services.
So with leveraged products, more than ever, you need to build that know, like and trust factor. So be prepared to put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to be yourself.
4. Are you realistic that creating a course is leveraged, not passive?
If you want to create a course because you think it is a surefire way to make money while you sleep, you’re in the wrong place. If you want passive income, see a financial advisor.
As I said earlier, it takes work to set up a course or program. Sure you could pre-record some videos and stick them online. But what about the marketing? Updating material? Maintenance? Even if you create a course that requires little input from you, there is still regular ongoing work to be done.
If you’re passionate about creating a high-quality program that gets amazing results for your clients, then you will need to actually show up. A great course or program requires your input, facilitation and presence – e.g. on calls or Facebook groups etc. So while you can teach a group of people in the same time it would have taken you to teach only one, it’s not passive, it’s leveraged.
So there you have it. The four questions you should ask yourself before you create a course or program.
