Today I wanted to talk to you about the importance creating products and packages in a way that plays to your strengths.

The Trap of Moving Outside Our Zone of Genius

We’re providing a service that we want to be providing, we’re loving it, it’s all going well and because this is like a match made in heaven and everyone’s happy, the client then asked you to do something else.

Often that thing is outside your Zone of Genius and it’s not something that you love to do. It’s not playing to your strengths but sometimes we say yes to those things because we want to say yes to our clients.

But it never ends well because either we end up feeling shit or we don’t do the best job, even if we are a fast learner.

A lot of my clients are high achievers, they’re fast learners and it’s like well, it’s not my Zone of Genius but I’m a fast learner, I’ll learn how to do this and I’ll do it at a really excellent level.

The thing is that it takes us away from that focus and clarity we need to succeed.

Setting Boundaries To Make Sure Everyone Wins

Let’s have a look at how do we actually package up our products and services in a way that is a win for our clients but is also a win for us.

In the left circle we have what our clients want. On the right ride we have how we like to work: what is our zone of genius, how do we love to work, how are we playing to our strengths? We want to do that stuff, so that when we finish work at the end of the day our tanks are full and not drained.

The overlap between the two is the only place that we create our products and services. Where those two things merge and meet.

You don’t want to go creating products and services that are over in what our clients want but not what we want and we don’t want to go creating stuff just because we get excited about something fun and new, bright shiny idea if our clients don’t want it because no one’s ever going to see it. No one’s going to want it, no one’s going to pay for it and it’s going to be a waste of time.

We’ve got to work in the sweet spot. We want to be creating products and services in that overlap.
