Why should I niche down?

Niching down feels like it should reduce your number of potential clients.

If you’re helping only a limited number of people, that’s a small amount of revenue and a small impact in the world.

But quite the opposite is true.

Nailing your Zone of Genius (that ONE THING you’re bloody brilliant at) is absolutely critical to getting the success that you want in your business.

I’m going to share with you the importance of this by sharing with you the mistakes that I made and what happened when I finally niched down and embraced my Zone of Genius.

Mistake #1: Offering what I thought my audience wanted

Back in November 2015, I wrote my first book, Share Your Passion.

This book has a seven-stage process of how to take what is in your head and turn it into a leveraged product.

I was focusing mostly on ONLINE COURSES. I was good at it. I was good at the process of building the foundation, getting it all setup and executing it.

But I didn’t LOVE it. And it showed.

It was a 7 Stage process to take what you do and turn it into a product like an Online Course.

I would get to Stage 4 in that process when I was working with clients, and I’d go, “This is the best bit.”

I even had clients tell me that they were going to make me a t-shirt for it.

Guess what? Stage 4 was all about creating a Signature System as the basis of your product.

Back in that first book, I called it ‘Blueprint’, but essentially what I was talking about was creating a Signature System using Visual Models.

Slow Learner

Now, for some reason it took me quite a few times of saying that for me to listen to my own language and my own feelings about this process and listen to the clues.

“Stage 4: this is the best bit, that’s my Zone of Genius.”

However, I continued to run the other 6 stages of the process.

They were zones of excellence.

I was great at helping clients get results there, but where I was serving my clients at the highest level was in stage four around the Signature Systems.

And honestly, I didn’t get as many clients as I would have liked because I just wasn’t in my Zone of Genius.

What’s Your “Best Bit”?

So I want you to think about, for your business, for your clients, what is the best bit for you?

What is the bit that you get so excited about, and you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this part of your process is where you add the most value to your clients?

There’s a clue about finding your Zone of Genius.

Mistake #2: Instead of niching down, I went broader

Instead of listening to myself say this is the best bit about Stage 4 over and over again, in 2017 I actually went in the opposite direction.

Instead of narrowing in on Stage 4, I went broader than the 7 Stages and thought, “Oh, I’m going to run a mastermind programme.”

Okay, 12-month mastermind programme. Now, the 7 Stages doesn’t take 12 months, so as my clients were finishing that 7-Stage process, I’d be twiddling my thumbs, going, “Hmm, okay.”

And suddenly they were asking me questions that weren’t even in my zone of excellence anymore. They were asking me for solutions and advice on things that were in my Zone of Kind-of-Good.

At that point I’d been in business 17 years, so I had experience in that stuff, but they’re not my Zone of Genius.

To no one’s surprise, I didn’t finish the 12 months in that programme.

I was honest with my clients and said, “Hey, let’s just cut the payments, let’s cut our ties. You got value to this point, but I don’t feel like I’m going to serve you ongoing.”

That was a real aha for me in saying … I mean, what was I doing?

One Crazy Idea…

I can tell you’re yelling at me now. I know, I know.

The lesson I got from that was, going broader was not the answer.

Then fast forward to November 2017. Stevie (my General Manager) and I were up in Brisbane to attend We Are Podcast, and we just had this moment of what if we just do Stage 4?

That was the biggest crazy turning point in the business.

From that moment, we redid in one afternoon, I created a whole new Signature System for the business.

We changed everything, and suddenly we were just like, “Oh my God, this is it. This is it. This is the thing.”

We went out for dinner that night, and we drank espresso martinis, and we were just buzzing, because we just knew that we’d nailed it. We knew. It was in every cell in our bodies that we were just like, “Oh my God, this is actually it, isn’t it?”

People Were Falling Over Themselves to Get Our New Offering

It was so exciting for us, but then to have that reflected back when clients were just attracted to us without effort. People want this. People want Signature Systems with visual models.

Part of that is because it’s my Zone of Genius, and it’s because I’m being really specific about that’s all that is that I do.

I’m not going to help you with your landing page or your email marketing.

I’m not going to help you with setting up your online course, because I don’t really want to care about the technology part of it.

And honestly, once we got super clear on the core niche of the business and dropped everything else, the business has gone from strength to strength. It was the biggest turning point in the history of Share Your Passion.

So, I ask you: what’s your Zone of Genius?

What could be possible if you niched down into just doing that?
